Havasupai/Supai Community

The Havasupai people live on traditional lands inside Havasu Canyon, a branch of Grand Canyon. Supai Village is eight miles from the canyon rim and must be reached by mule or on foot. Filmmakers had to carry all gear down to the village and back up to the rim, so this film is rather rare for this period of educational filmmaking.

Dictionary words were derived from the "Havasupai Word List," H.C. Whitener collection, Colorado Plateau Digital Archives, Northern Arizona University. They were also drawn from "Vocabulary in Native American Languages: Pai Words (Yavapai/Havasupai/Hualapai)" on native-languages.org. They were compiled by Melissa Dollman who is a non-Havasupai speaker. We very much welcome community vetting of these vocabulary words, and recommendations for additional resources.
